Tired, we were shuffling across the big airport terminal. Not tired from vacation but because it was late, coming 11 pm. I was commenting how sloppy I felt with my jeans and sketchers. I usually like to dress up for travel, a little neater not so casual. The crowd was thinning as everyone scooted different directions. The hallway we were in was almost empty now.
A black man was coming from the opposite direction towards us. He was wearing a long overcoat, beret and maybe a small brief case, I did not pay attention but it was not a suitcase. I thought he looked like a scholar, somehow. He had a well-trimmed medium long beard. It looked like he almost stopped to wait for us. I thought maybe he’ll ask for money but immediately wiped that thought as fast as it came, but somehow he clearly was waiting for us.
“God Bless America” he said. We were quiet for a second and I then said “I agree.” We were about to pass him when he asked “Where do you come from?” “Me? From Finland.” Did he mean the flight or my origin? He looks at me like pondering. “Finland?” “Yes.” “And you, Sir?” he said to my husband. “Oh, I’m a local boy,” he answered. “Is she your wife?” “Yes.” A moment passed, strange but not uncomfortable. Why was he asking these questions and why were we answering? “She is you wife, you said. She is a beautiful catch.” “Well, thank you!” my husband said and the men shook hands. “Congratulations! She is a beautiful catch.” the man repeated and continued on his way.
Was that a validation? Do we meet people for a purpose? God bless, it made my day.
